Normalize http://www1.cs.columbia.edu/[..]ll/normalize/ 17084x
Normalize is a tool for adjusting the volume of audio files to a standard level. This is useful for things like creating mixed CD's and mp3 collections, where different recording levels on different albums can cause the volume to vary greatly from song to song.

TeamSpeak http://www.teamspeak.org/ 15733x
TeamSpeak is an application which allows its users to talk to each other over the internet and basically was designed to run in the background of online games. The voice quality and hereby the bandwidth usage is configurable and can be low for modem users or as good as normal phone calls for better connections. Still the client's maximum bandwidth won't exceed 25.9 KBit/s (=3.3 KB/s) upstream. Also TeamSpeak uses as little latency as possible, which makes TeamSpeak one of the best online gaming communication programs. TeamSpeak has a lot more features than these basics, but even unexperienced users don't have to be scared. As TeamSpeak is divided into a server and a client application, advanced users can set up a TeamSpeak server, which is so to say the meeting point for the clients. This means that beginners can just fire up the client, connect to a server and talk to their friends. After the first small steps they will discover a whole variety of features that give TeamSpeak a high rating when it comes to voice chat tools as well.

TerminatorX http://www.terminatorx.cx/ 13408x
TerminatorX is a realtime audio synthesizer that allows you to "scratch" on digitally sampled audio data (*.wav, *.au, *.ogg, *.mp3, etc.) the way hiphop-DJs scratch on vinyl records. It features multiple turntables, realtime effects (buit-in as well as LADSPA plugin effects), a sequencer and MIDI interface - all accessible through an easy-to-use gtk+ GUI.

Kwave http://kwave.sourceforge.net 12633x
Kwave is a sound editor designed for the KDE Desktop Environment. With Kwave you can edit many sorts of wav-files including multi-channel files. You are able to alter and play back each channel on its own. Kwave also includes many plugins (most are still under development) to transform the wave-file in several ways and presents a graphical view with a complete zoom- and scroll capability.

GNoise http://gnoise.sourceforge.net 12097x
Wave file editor for Linux. Prime considerations were for it to be speedy and be able to handle big files. So far it can: load and display files, generate a display cache, play the file, cut, copy, paste, (unlimited) undo, mute, fade in/out, reverse, normalize, and more.

Parallel Bladeenc http://www.osl.iu.edu/[..]res/bladeenc/ 11511x
Parallel Bladeenc is a true parallel version of the Bladeenc MP3 encoder; it distributes work across CPUs to speed up MP3 encoding. It uses the Message Passing Interface (MPI) for parallelization across SMPs and/or multiple machines. Hence, if you have a 4-way SMP, you can encode your MP3s about 4 times as fast as the regular Bladeenc; if you have two 4-way SMPs, you can encode about 8 times as fast.

SoundTracker http://www.soundtracker.org/ 11418x
SoundTracker is a music tracking tool for Unix / X11 similar in design to the DOS program FastTracker and the Amiga legend ProTracker. Samples can be lined up on tracks and patterns which are then arranged to a song. Supported module formats are XM and MOD; the player code is the one from OpenCP. A basic sample recorder and editor is also included.

Ardour http://ardour.org/ 11257x
Ardour is a multichannel hard disk recorder (HDR) and digital audio workstation (DAW). It is capable of simultaneous recording of 24 or more channels of 32 bit audio at 48kHz. Ardour is intended to function as a professional HDR system, replacing dedicated hardware solutions such as the Mackie HDR, the Tascam 2424 and more traditional tape systems like the Alesis ADAT series. It is also intended to provide the same or better functionality as proprietary software DAWs such as ProTools, Samplitude, Logic Audio, Nuendo and Cubase VST/SX. It supports MIDI Machine Control, and so can be controlled from any MMC controller, such as the Mackie Digital 8 Bus mixer and many other modern digital mixers. Ardour can operate as an MTC slave or master, allowing synchronization with various MTC and SMPTE devices.

mp3 CUE cutter http://www.bl0rg.net/[..]software/poc/ 10557x
mp3cue cuts an input MP3 file according to the information stored in a .cue file (for example multiple tracks of DJ mix), and writes the output to multiple MP3 files.

In layman's terms, this program lets you make cool sounds by pointing and clicking on a graph. This is somewhat similar to what some digital sythesizers are able to do.

BEAST http://beast.gtk.org/ 7795x

The rough goal of this project is to get an audio system that supports multiple song and sample formats (besides the newly introduced .bse format) as well as synthesis networks and allows full fledged editing and manipulation of them. Sample manipulation includes generation of new sounds from module networks, based on various forms of audio synthesis.
