This video player is similar in concept to Xine. It was created in response to Xanim's inability to play newer media formats.
To solve this problem without breaking patents or reverse engineering, this program uses the same binary codecs that would be used under Windows. Playback is quite good, with options like full-screen viewing and hardware acceleration.
